Work
Los Angeles At The FIL
With over half a million visitors every year, the Guadalajara International Book Fair is regarded as the most important venue in the Spanish-language book world.
In 2009 the City of Los Angeles was invited as the guest of honor to share its culture with the literary world. Commissioned by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, the 20,000 sf Pavillion paid tribute to many writers and artists whose work has helped shape the unique culture of the City and provided exhibit and meeting infrastructure to accommodate 50,000 daily visitors. Its design, created by John Friedman Alice Kimm Architects, reflects LA's cultural and industrial landscape through innovative use of media technology and materials.
Upon closing, major portions of the installation, almost fully comprised of recycled materials, was donated to the City of Guadalajara for reconfiguration and permanent placement within one of its civic public spaces.
Key collaborations: John Friedman Alice Kimm Architects, CiscoBrothers, Buro Happold Engineering, Andy Goldman Design and AirStar.
